Dismissal from NHS
- Membership is open to juniors and seniors who have been enrolled at DCHS for at least one full semester and have a 95 or higher cumulative grade point average (not rounded).
- Members must also meet the disciplinary, service, and meeting requirements outlined below.
Academic Requirements
- Members of the DCHS NHS must maintain a 95 cumulative grade point average (NGA), not rounded.
- If a member fails to maintain a 95 cumulative grade point average (NGA), not rounded, at the end of a semester, they will be permanently dismissed from NHS.
- Additionally, a member will be dismissed from NHS for failing any class, regardless of NGA.
- Seniors must be enrolled in 2 academic courses per semester their senior year to maintain membership in NHS.
Service Requirements
- Members must be ready, willing, and able to commit time fulfilling community service projects.
- Current members & Newly-inducted members must complete a minimum of three service projects per school quarter, completing nine projects for the school year. Newly-inducted members will not be required to complete projects during the first quarter and senior members will not be required to complete projects during the fourth quarter.
- Members will be provided a list of dates detailing when each quarter’s projects are due.
- Service projects must follow all guidelines for acceptable service projects, must be documented correctly and completely on the form provided, and must be turned in to a NHS sponsor on time.
- NHS sponsors are not responsible for projects not turned in to the appropriate location.
- Completing extra service projects each quarter DO NOT carry over to the next quarter.
- Members may not duplicate service projects in quarter.
- Only one project per quarter can be a monetary donation.
Disciplinary Requirements
- Members CANNOT have any disciplinary referrals that result in disciplinary action while in high school. The Code of Discipline is listed in the DCHS Student Handbook.
- Members must demonstrate characteristics and qualities that are highlighted by the pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Meeting Requirements
- Members are required to attend all meetings and be on time. Members will be provided with a list of meeting dates, times, and locations.
- If a student misses one meeting, they will be required to complete an extra project for that quarter.
- If a member fails to sign in to a meeting, he will be charged with an absence. The responsibility for signing in belongs to the member, not the officers or sponsors.
- Any member who misses an NHS meeting due to a pre-approved educational requirement must see a sponsor prior to the missed meeting to get all information needed. The student must have their educational requirement pre-approved by an NHS sponsor. If the student fails to meet with a sponsor in advance, the absence will count as a meeting absence and the student is subject to an extra project or dismissal.
Officer Requirements
- Officers are required to attend all member and officer meetings. Officers may not miss more than one officer meeting per semester. Any officer who misses more than one officer meeting will be dismissed as an NHS officer.
- Officers will also be asked to commit extra time, as needed, at the request of the sponsors or administration.
- Officers CANNOT have any disciplinary referrals that result in disciplinary action. The Code of Discipline is listed in the DCHS Student Handbook.
Club-sponsored service projects
- Club sponsored service projects will take place at least once each nine weeks. Members will be given sufficient notice and will be expected to plan accordingly.
- A list of available service projects can be found on the NHS webpage on our school’s website.
- Service projects that are completed for other organizations on campus or in the community may not be counted as NHS projects.
- ANY service project not listed on the website MUST have PRIOR APPROVAL from the NHS sponsors in order for the project to count.
Dismissal from NHS
- Academically:
- Any member that fails to maintain a 95, cumulative grade point average (NGA), not rounded, will be dismissed from NHS.
- Seniors who fail to have 2 academic courses per semester their senior year will be dismissed from NHS.
- A member will be dismissed from NHS for failing any class, regardless of NGA.
- Service: Any member that fails to complete the required service projects per quarter will be dismissed from NHS.
- Discipline: Any member that receives ANY disciplinary action for a discipline referral will be permanently dismissed from NHS.
- Meeting Attendance: Any member who misses more than one meeting in a semester will be permanently dismissed from NHS.
